Mid-term evaluation of the Tumen River international waters and biodiversity project covering China, North and South Korea, Russia and Mongolia. Experienced a severe dust storm at the end of an eight hour drive across the frozen steppes in April. Livestock ownership had been privatized in Mongolia but range lands remained state property and there were no controls over livestock numbers and use. This resulted in dust storms that closed down or severely restricted the computer chip and ship building industries in South Korea during our trip. Found that the Mongolians have a rather obsessive belief in the the health benefits from drinking the milk from white mares.
