GEF Project Design Led the development of a full project document for an FAO/GEF multi-focal area participatory sustainable forest management project for the miombo forests of the Lubumbashi charcoal supply zone. The project is strongly based on 30 years of participatory dryland forest management experience in six Sahelian countries. The project will develop self-financing management systems on 200,000 has of miombo woodlands with a two-tiered management structure that will employ its own technical staff to provide key technical support beyond the end of donor funding. Employed by FAO in 2014 and ’15.

GEF Project Concept Development Developed a concept (PIF) for an FAO/GEF participatory miombo forest management project for the charcoal supply zone of Lubumbashi in Katanga Province.

Program Evaluation Team Leader for the evaluation of the USAID-funded Central African Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE), a $140 million program covering nine countries. Found the “landscape approach” and land use planning of to be the two greatest strengths. Documented good progress on PA management and natural forest management. Found community-based natural resource management to be the weakest aspect of CARPE and only one country had a legal framework for CBNRM. Found that nearly all of CARPE’s landscape interventions have secondary positive effects on climate change mitigation. Recommended Phase III be extended to 2020 and that program be diversified to include climate change mitigation. Visited the AWF project site in DRC. Employed by ECODIT under USAID funding in 2010.

GEF Biodiversity Project Design Led team of 15 consultants for the development of a participatory wildlife management project for the humid forest ecosystems of Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo and Central African Republic. This approved Bushmeat Project will be the first to do sustainable wildlife management for the bushmeat market. Employed by FAO in 2010 and ’11.
