Led a team of three consultants to conduct a 118/119 biodiversity assessment to guide US government programs in Morocco. Developed an innovative methodology based on the identification of direct threats to biodiversity and of barriers to biodiversity conservation and the identification of measures needed to overcome the constraints. Employed by ECODIT under USAID-funding in 2008
GEF Project Design Led the design of a $2 million GEF Integrated Forest Ecosystem Management Project for the Middle Atlas Mountains. Discovered that overgrazing is so severe that there is virtually no regeneration of forest species and that present management systems do not address this threat. Developed a design that will empower community managers to co-manage forest and range resources, that will require them to develop grazing systems that ensure forest regeneration and that control erosion, and that will empower them, for the first time, to harvest and market forest products following an agreed management plan. Employed by UNOPS for UNDP in 2005.
Watershed Management Team leader for an assessment of watershed management needs in the Rif and Middle Atlas Mountains. Identified watershed management programming options for future project design. Employed by xxx under USAID funding in 1989.
Peace Corps Volunteer and Arboretum Manager for the Moroccan Forest Research Station. I lived at the Oued Cherrate Arboretum five kilometers from the nearest town without electricity for three years. Completely reorganized thirty years of planting records and developed a management plan for the arboretum. Conducted Canary Island pine growth study and co-authored study results presented at the World Forestry Congress in 1972. Managed four timber sales and up to 20 workers. Became fluent in Moroccan Arabic. 1970 to ’73.
