Traveled to Gambia from the CRTO in Ouagadougou to plan a remote sensing study of a recently discovered disease (Cylindrocarpon didyum) of red mangroves that was thought to threatening the huge mangrove forests of the coastal estuaries of Gambia and Senegal and perhaps other red mangrove (Rhizophoa) forests on the continent. Discovered that most of the objectives of the study as proposed by the Scottish head of the Forest Department were already covered by a German-funded forest mapping and inventory project.

Conducted an agroforestry training workshop for Peace Corps volunteers and their Gambian counterparts at an upcountry training center. Training stressed the importance of land tenure and tree rights. On a field visit to a gardening site and future agroforestry site supported by one of the volunteers, the trainees discovered that the man who owned the land would not allow the community gardeners to plant fruit or other trees in the garden — a very good learning experience for all the trainees.
